H.E.R Speaks On Her Debut Album, Touring With Chris Brown & More

Words By Melody Timothee — The anticipation for singer-songwriter H.E.R. to make her JAMZ Live debut in the 99JAMZ penthouse was on 10. It's no surprise at all that our downstairs lobby was filled with listeners excited for their chance to connect with H.E.R. on a different plateau. Listeners from West Palm Beach arrived at least two hours early to guarantee their place in front row.

H.E.R., an acronym for “Having Everything Revealed”, carries an anonymous identity so that she can only be recognized by her music rather than her appearance. After her debut seven-song EP H.E.R. Vol. 1 was released back in 2016, her popularity escalated so much that she received much support from Alicia Keys, Bryson Tiller, Usher, Tyrese and more.

“Janet Jackson came to my show in London," she told Felisha Monet. "That was like ‘whoaa’ you came to my show? You went out of your way to come see me perform live.”

The dimly lit lights created the perfect ambiance to coincide with H.E.R mysterious presence. As the crowd entered and gathered their seats, Felisha Monet sat on the white couches on stage, which heightened the crowd's eager atmosphere. She hyped up the listeners even more when she teased H.E.R. entrance. With all the “WOOs” and screams, Big Mack came through to throw the “WOO” back at 'em and crack jokes. That's when the phones lights ignited throughout the room to capture a good view of H.E.R. as she made her way to the stage.

Felisha Monet got her to open up about her lowkey lifestyle, and dropped gems about her influences she has had to create and craft her sound. She touches on personal experiences that helped her choose what to write about, and construct her coveted writing format.

“Music is a language to me that everybody speaks. That’s kind of my mentality when I create. It isn’t just for me. It’s for a lot of people out there... we feel the same.”

As the interview progressed audience members had the opportunity to ask H.E.R. questions and get more insight on her life. She went on to speak about her forthcoming tour with Chris Brown, her upbringing as a child, and what it was like balancing schoolwork and music. She also revealed that her debut album is set to drop this year.

H.E.R.’s interview ended with an unexpected surprise. As she made her way to the keyboard, a golden light drenched her place at the mic. H.E.R. fingers traced the keys for the intro to her hit single “Focus." Everyone picked up their phones to capture her singing and enjoy her blissful voice. She teased us with a small portion of another single “Losing," and left everyone wanting more. The afternoon concluded with a special Meet & Greet with H.E.R. and left with hugs and pictures with the R&B sensation.
